Differences between MDF, MDP, plywood and OSB board.

Over the past few years, wood has received increasing attention in the construction industry. With concerns about sustainability and the carbon footprint of buildings, new construction methods and innovative possibilities for wood use have been rapidly developed. This interest in wood stems in part from its renewability, although this benefit depends on sustainable harvesting and proper forest management to allow for natural regeneration. However, the versatility of wood is the main driving force behind its widespread use. From planks to beams, to floors, and even to thermal and acoustic bricks and insulators, wood can be used in many different stages of a single project and processed and finished to varying degrees.
In the case of manufacturing furniture, wall coverings, ceilings and even floors, using planks is an economical and practical way to integrate wood into a building. There are a variety of wood panels available on the market, each using a different manufacturing process involving fibers, particles, fragments or sheets, resulting in a specific use. Next, we select the most commonly used boards, including their characteristics and main uses:

MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard)
MDF panels are made of wood fibers bonded with synthetic resin and compressed by pressure and heat, resulting in a strong and very uniform floor with a good finish and durability. Since the fibers are randomly oriented, the machine can cut them in any direction, providing a smooth surface. Naturally, the board is not very waterproof, but more moisture resistant and sometimes even fire resistant options do exist on the market.
Currently, MDF boards are the most commonly used woodworking material because they are compatible with many different finishes, including simple lacquers, natural panels or melamine gluing, and even patterned printing. But they can also be used elsewhere, such as in cladding on walls and doors.
HDF (High density Fiberboard) is very similar to MDF, but their manufacturing process is different. When compressed at higher pressures, these boards are more resistant, support more weight, and can cover larger extensions.

They are also ecological and durable, resistant to outdoor activities and the effects of rain, humidity, wind and heat. In addition, the boards are fully recyclable. However, due to their rough surface, it is not possible to apply laminate products to them.
